A Call for Ethics and the Bulging Weiner

"A Call for Ethics and the Bulging Weiner"

Anthony Weiner Breaking News MSNBC Press Conference June 6, 2011.

Anthony Weiner, NY House of Representative, according to NDN  confesses to inappropriate lewd sexual conduct with other women online, after days of denials, a choked-up New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner confessed Monday (6/6/2011) that he tweeted a photo of his bulging underpants to a woman and admitted to inappropriate exchanges with six women before and after getting married. He apologized for lying but said he would not resign.”

Anthony Weiner is the latest public official caught with his pants down surrounding his "sexting, inappropriate phone calls,  and sex-email" scandal.  His online behavior, known now by some as "Weinergate," continues to shed light on the questionable behavior found in our high-ranking government and public figures.   The United States House of Representatives Ethics Committee vows to investigate New York Representative Anthony Weiner’s recent sexually inappropriate Internet emails, text messages, and phone calls made to young women from him.

As reported in a recent ABC Nightly News video anchored by Diane Sawyer, Anthony Weiner is under fire for his recent online behavior. New York State Representative Anthony Weiner will have his online activities examined under the microscope by a house ethics committee review. The atrocity of Representative Weiner’s actions is further enhanced since the nature of his cover-up was prolonged through his repeated denials of ever sending lewd Internet pictures to a young woman.  Finally, folding to the pressure of his actions, he admitted in a press conference that he in fact compromised himself by sending lewd pictures to a woman on his Twitter account.

Weiner, who is known as an outspoken member of congress, appeared heartbroken during his press conference for the pain caused to his wife and constituents.  Even though his behavior is being investigated and clearly shows bad personal judgment, Weiner refuses to give up his house seat.  According to one online site; Zimbio, “Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) admits to sending a lewd Twitter photo of himself to a woman and then lying about it during a press conference at the Sheraton Hotel on 7th Avenue on June 6, 2011 in New York City. Weiner said he had not met any of the women in person but had numerous sexual relationships online while married.”

Recent flurries exposing illicit and reprehensible behaviors of our elected officials calls to questions whether more scrutiny, punishment, and less hypocrisy from both political parties need examination and more action.  Since the Bill Clinton era there have been a dozen high ranking political leaders’ sex scandals exposed as shown in a recent video from news commentary Rachel Maddow.  Tim Murphy, a reporter at Mother Jones, ranks Weiner with other tops political officials caught in sex scandals that have been forced to come clean in a public press conference.

In Thomas Hawk/Flickr photo the current state that our high-ranking political figures and public figures are found is referenced as “The Doghouse”.

Boundaries stretched, bulging pants photos texted, sexually explicit behavior shown, lewd inappropriate actions exposed; has become the norm found on our elected officials’ resumes.  When asked about the bulging pants photo, Weiner initially said it was part of an online practical joke.   Is this more than a practical online joke or indicative of the moral and ethical breach seen amongst our nation’s public figures?

There are some in the public who do not seem too concerned with the personal lives of our national leaders and public figures as indicated in a recent "Analysis" article.
According to Steve Leblanc of the Associated Press, “Analysis: History suggests Weiner just may survive scandal.  He further writes, “If he manages to keep his seat in Congress, Anthony Weiner would join a handful of political figures who survived what initially looked like a career-ending debacle.  And even if the experiences of the likes of Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, David Vitter and others weren’t enough, a new poll points to a forgiving constituency.”

Even with the seemingly forgiving public, there are some who have a differing viewpoint, demanding leader accountability and high ethical standards in their conduct.

There are a group of individuals hailing the “call for ethical behavior” as shown in the following video trailer from the “Doing the Right Thing” movement.  According to  "Doing the Right Thing" website, "A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon the world" - Albert Camus

According to Chuck Colson it is time for "Doing the Right Thing" on Ethics. Photo from Breakpoint Colson Center website.

Chuck Colson, former Watergate aide and also familiar with scandal in the political landscape, recently launched this campaign for support of high moral and ethical standards in our leadership.  Founder of the Colson Center, Chuck Colson, explores ethics over six thirty minute sessions before a live student audience in Princeton, NJ.  Colson, along with the other panel members, put together this "resource for small groups studies to help you understand the role of and need for ethics in the marketplace, public square, and every arena of society." The panel of speakers addresses in a Q and A forum the issues facing leadership upholding high ethical standards in their professional positions and private conduct.

Representative Weiner may escape the House Ethics Committee review unscathed with only now a new reputation developed from his lapse in online judgment.   However, his bulging pants tweet is indicative of a current trend exposing another politician in the recently growing long list of sex scandal revelations.
